For dog owners, having a flea infestation is a cause for alarm. These parasites can cause serious diseases to your dogs and, if left untreated, the infestation may invade your home and bite the people in your house too. Unfortunately, summertime is the season for fleas and no matter how you keep your dogs clean, they can get those parasites from the grasses in your surroundings. This is why you should be very observant of your dogs during this season. Investigate immediately if you see them scratching excessively and if you see any signs of fleas then you should treat right away.
Flea shampoos are effective treatment for infestations and they are less costly too. This medicated shampoo will kill fleas on contact, which is why if you look at the instructions on the container, it is advised that you keep it on your dogs’ fur for several minutes before rinsing. The effects of the shampoo, however, will not last long, so you have to bathe your dogs regularly with it until all the fleas are gone. In fact, you can use the flea shampoo all year round just to prevent any infestation.
Dog Flea Collar
You have to be careful when using flea collars because some dogs are allergic to it. If you see them scratching excessively or developing rashes, especially around their necks, then you should stop using the collar. When placing a flea collar on your dogs, make sure that it is not too loose or it will not be effective at all. The collar needs to touch your dog’s skin so that the active chemicals in it will transfer on your dog’s skin and fur. Flea collars are also effective at killing and repelling fleas, but they may not be as effective if there is a major infestation in your home or in your dog’s environment.
Here is another inexpensive treatment for your dog’s fleas. You need to apply the powder on your dog’s skin and fur regularly since its effectiveness can wear off fast. Always read the instructions on the label. Avoid directly inhaling the powder, as this can be harmful for both the dog and the owner, which is why flea powders are often recommended to be applied on the dog’s body only, avoiding the head area.
Spot On Flea Treatment
If you want a fast and a very effective way to kill fleas, spot on treatments are recommended. This oily liquid is poured directly on the skin of your dogs. Just a little amount will do because it has a way of spreading on your dog’s body through the oil glands. Spot on treatments also last longer, so even if your dog takes a bath, it will continue working.
Once you have treated your dog’s flea infestation, you should also make sure that your surrounding is kept clean to avoid another infestation cycle to start. Disinfect the interior of your home and vacuum every corner. You should keep the grasses on your yard trimmed too, as this is where flea larvae stay. You can have your yard treated for pests, but make sure that your dogs or kids stay away from that area during and immediately after treatment.
